Bee Arthur

 

Celebrating Beatrice Bee Arthur during Women’s History Month. Bee is a daughter, sister, friend, women’s advocate, mentor, curator, linguistic professional, TV personality, and renowned fashion designer.

Bee is of German/Polish/Russian and Ghanaian descent and was born in Odessa, Ukraine. She graduated from the University of Ghana with a BA in Linguistics, Sociology & Spanish Literature. After completing her national service with the Ghana Tourist Board, she entered the fashion scene through the "back door" and shortly after she surprised herself and the world by winning the Kora All Africa Fashion Award in Sun City, South Africa in 2001. 

Between 2001 and 2015, Bee Arthur participated in over 10 international fashion events and shows both on the African continent and in Europe. She has been featured in television, radio, and numerous printed and online magazines both in Ghana and internationally including BRUNE (FR), NEW AFRICAN WOMAN(UK), MADAME LE FIGARO (FR), and many more.  Most recently, she has been featured in an academic publication by Prof Christopher Richards of Brooklyn University " Cosmopolitanism and Women's Fashion in Ghana". Her photoshoot with ace photographer Dean Zulich UN 2009 at the Elmina Castle dubbed FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY is one of her best collaborative works and also provided the book cover for Prof. RIchards above-mentioned publication.  

Aside from fashion, Bee Arthur is also a TV personality. She was on the Ghanaian TV Talk Show "TODAY'S WOMAN" for several years and later became one of the 3 judges for the MALTA GUINNESS STREET DANCE COMPETITION for 3 seasons. Bee has collaborated with USAID on gender-biased projects focused on empowering women in Northern Ghana and she has also been part of campaigns by UNAIDS to promote safe sex practices in Ghana ( PROTECT THE GOAL). In the past, Bee Arthur has been engaged with The Gender Development Project, www.ewuraba.com (by the Pearl Richards Foundation, Ghana), a project in an advisory role as a Fashion Consultant and has been a mentor and an inspiration to young African fashion designers and creatives and to women in general.  In 2009, she co-hosted the Miss ECOWAS Peace Pageant 2009 organized in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria. In the past, Bee Arthur added her voice and presence in the Anti-Poverty Campaign organized in Ghana by Creative Storm, 2005.

Bee Arthur is a polyglot, so when she is not designing, decorating exteriors, or curating art exhibitions, she translates texts for the BBC Radio or works as a press assistant to the renowned contemporary artist Prof.El Anatsui.
